Violin With Marta Calgary & Online

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about lessons, pricing, and getting started.

Getting Started

Do I need my own violin to start?
Not right away. The free resources page has videos and guides covering what you need to know before buying or renting. When you are ready, I can help you choose the right instrument for your level and budget.
Is it too late to learn as an adult?
Not at all. Many of my students started as adults. You will learn differently than a child, but that is an advantage. Adults tend to progress quickly because they understand why each technique matters.
What ages do you teach?
I work with children ages 4 and up, and adults of all ages. Whether your child is just starting or you are picking up a new hobby in retirement, the approach is tailored to you.
Where are you based and what time zone do you teach in?
I live in Calgary, Canada. I teach in person across Calgary and online worldwide in Mountain Time (MST/MDT). When booking an online lesson, you will see available times converted to your local time zone.

Free Resources

What free resources are available?
The free resources page has four beginner video lessons (bow hold, violin hold, tuning, and your first song), an online violin tuner, a metronome, and an interactive fingerboard trainer — all free with no email required. There is also a free PDF starter kit you can download by entering your email.
Do I need an account to access the free videos and tools?
No account or email needed. Go to /free-violin-resources and everything is available right away. The PDF starter kit is the only thing that asks for your email.

Online Lessons

How do online lessons work?
Lessons happen over Google Meet. You will need a stable internet connection, a device with a camera, and your violin. I send personalized homework after each lesson.
How much do online lessons cost?
Two packages are available: 4 lessons of 45 minutes (230 CAD) or 4 lessons of 30 minutes (170 CAD). Payment is one-time, before lessons begin. Prices are shown in CAD, USD, or EUR and are charged in Canadian dollars.
How do I book my lessons after paying?
After checkout, you get access to a booking page where you can pick all 4 lesson times upfront. Lessons happen online via Google Meet. You can reschedule a lesson up to 24 hours before it starts.
Can I try a lesson before committing?
Yes. I offer a free fifteen minute intro lesson. Bring your violin if you have one and play a little so I can see where you are starting from. If you do not have one yet, that is fine, we talk through your goals. No pressure.

In Person Lessons (Calgary)

Do you teach in person in Calgary?
Yes. I come to your home anywhere in Calgary for weekly one-on-one lessons. You pay once for a pack of 4 lessons, one a week: 30 minutes (180 CAD), 45 minutes (240 CAD), or 60 minutes (300 CAD). We start with a free intro lesson.
How does the free intro lesson work?
The free intro lesson is a warm, fifteen minute video call before any lessons begin. Bring your violin if you have one and play a little so I can see where you are starting from. If you do not have a violin yet, that is fine, we talk through your goals and what you want to play. To book, click the "Book a free intro lesson" button at the top of the page, pick a time that works for you, and you will receive a Google Meet link by email.

Payments & Billing

What payment methods do you accept?
Payments are processed through Stripe, which accepts all major credit and debit cards.
What is your refund policy?
Online lesson packages: attended and unused lessons are not refundable, and packages expire 45 days after purchase. Reschedules need at least 24 hours notice, otherwise the lesson counts as used. If you have completed 3 of 4 lessons, I will extend the package by 10 days. Full details on my refund policy page.

Technical

What do I need for online lessons?
A stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone (laptop, tablet, or phone), and your violin. A quiet room with enough space to stand and play works best.
What devices can I use to access the site?
The site works on any modern browser, whether desktop, tablet, or phone. For video lessons, a larger screen is recommended so you can see techniques clearly.
